DPP advises no charges for Presidential guard accused of slapping teacher

The Director of Public Prosecutions has advised that no charges be filed against the Presidential bodyguard who allegedly slapped an Aishalton teacher who heckled President Ramotar during a community political meeting back in December.

The teacher’s attorney, Nigel Hughes received a letter from the Police Commissioner (ag) Seelal Persaud informing him of the DPP’s advice. In that letter, the Police Commissioner said that a report was compiled  and submitted to the DPP after investigations were carried out and the DPP advised that no charges be filed against the bodyguard in the matter.

The teacher, John Adams, had filed a complaint against the Presidential guard after he reported that he was accosted by the guard and slapped to the face for heckling the President during the political meeting.

An audio recording of the same meeting surfaced and the President could be heard telling someone in the audience in response to their criticism of former President Jagdeo that “You don’t know anything about Jagdeo; if he been here, he might have slap you, cause you stupid”.

Just after that statement, the President continued his speech and berated the Opposition political parties over their control of the National Assembly. He also launched an attack on the Stabroek News and the Kaieteur News and accused the media houses of being “opposition media”.

It was at the same meeting that the Amerindian teacher claimed that he was roughed up and slapped to the face by one of the Presidential guards because he voiced his concerns during the meeting about the state of the country and the President’s constant blaming of the opposition parties and the independent media.

The Presidential Guard Service claimed that the teacher was never physically assaulted by any of the Presidential guards, but that he was told about his behavior during the meeting.

The teacher later complained that he was not expecting much out of the police investigations because of the length of time it took for them to begin the probe following his complaint.
