Opposition Member of Parliament, Bishop Juan Edghill, returned to the National Assembly on Thursday, more than a month after he was suspended by House Speaker Dr. Barton Scotland for gross misconduct.

In a comment to News Source, the MP said he intends to continue his work as an elected member of the Assembly and will be respectful in doing so.

Notwithstanding his commitment to being respectful, Edghill said he is not fettered by the actions taken and does not intend to be bullied in the House.

“I will continue to expose wrongdoing and bring to public notice any lack of accountability and transparency,” he said. 

Edghill was allowed into the Chambers unhindered and occupied the same seat he did prior to the suspension as the House moved forward with the debate on the Protected Disclosures Bill.

He said he is back to continue his work as a legislator “I will do so without fear or favor, without ill will or without malice and I will do so to the best of my ability.” a humbled Edghill told News Source. 

The PPP MP said he will continue to ensure that when he speaks he represents the interest of the people of Guyana.

Edghill was suspended ordered out of the Chamber during the consideration of budget estimates on December 10, 2017.

He had refused to heed the Speaker’s orders, leading to the police being called in and a confrontation between the lawmen and the opposition MPs.

Edghill was prevented from entering the precincts of Parliament Buildings when he returned the following day and was further suspended from four sittings of the National Assembly.

During his suspension, Edghill was not paid a salary or allowances and he also temporarily lost the other benefits as a Member of the National Assembly.

He was not entitled to attend sittings of the National Assembly or meetings of Parliamentary Committees or lodge questions or submit notices of motions.
