Essequibo fisherman dies in fire at home

A 38-year-old fisherman from Paradise on the Essequibo Coast, lost his life in a fire last evening at his home. Family members suspect that the man might have deliberately started the fire.

He has been identified as Terry Persaud Lall.

The man reportedly lived alone in the one-flat concrete house. He was last seen alive by his sister who lives in the same yard.

The sister told investigators that her brother spent the day at Lake Mainstay and arrived home last night in a drunken state.

She said she saw him entering his house at around 7:30 on Sunday night and two hours later, heavy smoke and fire were seen in the house. An alarm was raised, but the fire spread quickly throughout the house.

Firemen arrived at the scene and doused the blaze, but most of the house was already gutted. During their clean-up of their operation, the charred remains of the man were found.

Investigations are ongoing.
