Father dies after saving daughters from drowning

The village of Jawalla in the Essequibo region has been left in mourning following the death of a father, who drowned after saving his two young daughters.

Reports from the area state that the incident occurred on Friday afternoon as the man and his two children were heading back home in a canoe from the family’s farm.

The small boat reportedly started to take in water and that was when 41-year-old Latchman Benjie knew that he needed to get his daughters to safety.  He reportedly got them to mangroves that are in the area and they held on as they screamed for help.

When help arrived, the two girls were rescued but the father was nowhere to be seen. His body was found in the same river on Saturday afternoon.

He has been described as a humble villager and farmer and residents believed that the long boots that he was wearing at the time, may have been the reason he drowned. A prove is underway.
