Firemen against attempt to prolong Edoo’s time as Fire Chief

With Fire Chief Kalamadeen Edoo nearing retirement, several firemen are making it clear that they are against any attempt to postpone the Fire Chief’s retirement and prolong his time in the Guyana Fire Service.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a number of the firemen have explained that the Fire Chief should be heading off into retirement this month but appears unwilling to do so.

They said he has served the Guyana Fire Service for 32 years and it is now time for him to go and enjoy his retirement.

It is feared that if approval is granted for an extension of Edoo’s time in the Fire Service, it will further affect the promotion of other senior officers.

One officer pointed out that the same way the previous Fire Chief was denied an extension in his contract and allowed to head off into retirement, the same ought to be meted out to the current Fire Chief. Some of the officers believe that that there are several far more qualified officers who are deserving of promotions, but those promotions have not been taking place.

Several Firemen had filed Court action against the current Fire Chief over their promotions. The matter is still before the Courts.

They are threatening that if there is any extension in Mr. Edoo’s tenure, they will down their tools and strike since they believe other offices are deserving of the opportunity to be elevated in the Service.

“Mr. Kalamadeen Edoo must not be given any form of extension, seeing that it is going to directly hinder the growth and development of other officers and ranks in the Guyana Fire Service”, the concerned firemen told News Source.

Last October, Mr. Edoo was sent on administrative leave following the Fire Service’s embarrassing blunders during the fire which gutted the Brickdam Police station. However, three weeks after he was sent on leave over his management failures, he was allowed to return to the job with no explanation being provided over that decision.
