Five teens to be charged for Professor Mars’ murder; PME lists manual strangulation as cause of death

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum has confirmed that five of the six teenagers who were arrested for the murder of retired University Professor, Dr. Perry Mars will be charged on Tuesday.

The police received advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions on Monday afternoon, instructing that murder charges be brought against the five teens who were in police custody since Friday last.

Mr. Blanhum said the sixth individual will not be charged for the murder since he was only found in possession of items that were stolen from Dr. Mars’ Prashad Nagar home.

The teens who are 17-years-old and the 18-years-old will be charged as adults while the 15-year-old will charged as a juvenile. The Crime Chief said that a Post Mortem Examination which was conducted on the man’s body found that he died from “manual strangulation compounded by multiple trauma to the face and head”.

Dr. Mars who worked for a number of years at Universities in the U.S and Guyana, was found beaten to death at his home last Thursday night. His hands and feet were tied and his mouth was gagged. The teens were arrested on Friday last.

Family members of the dead man said that Mr. Mars had a kind heart and would assist the same teens from time to time.

The teenagers were seen leaving the man’s house late Thursday with a number of suitcases and bags and were later positively identified. Mars was discovered murdered by his wife in the same room that he used for painting.
