Former MP remanded to prison; Co-accused pleads guilty in marijuana trafficking case

Alliance For Change Executive Member and Former APNU+AFC Member of Parliament, Devin Sears, was remanded to jail this morning after pleading not guilty to drug trafficking in a 650-pound marijuana bust case.

His co-accused, 69-year-old Albert Sandy, was sentenced to 4 years in jail after he entered a guilty plea in the same case.

The two men appeared at the Linden Magistrate’s Court this morning, three days after they were arrested by the Police at the Bamia Police check-point with several parcels of marijuana in a mini-bus. Sears was the driver of the bus. His co-accused, Albert Sandy, is a farmer from the Upper Berbice River community of Tacama.

During the Court appearance this morning, Sandy was immediately sentenced to four years in jail after pleading guilty to the charge. However, with Sears pleading not guilty, his Attorney Nigel Hughes, requested bail, arguing that the former Member of Parliament is not a flight risk and that he would comply with any Court imposed conditions.

The Prosecution objected to bail while noting the seriousness of the charge and the large amount of marijuana that is at the centre of the charge. The Magistrate refused bail and remanded Sears to prison until the 11th November when the matter is expected to continue.

The 39-year-old former Member of Parliament was a rising star in the Alliance For Change and headed the party’s campaign in the town of Linden at the 2025 elections.

The Police said he was the driver of the mini-bus that was stopped on Monday night at the Bamia check-point with the other man, Albert Sandy being the only other passenger.

The Police said the two were arrested after a search of the bus unearthed the large parcels of marijuana. A Police statement indicated that during questioning, Sears denied ownership of the illegal drug claiming that he was transporting tourism plants. 69-year-old Albert Sandy immediately claimed ownership of the marijuana and told investigators that he had hired Sears to take him and his cargo to Parika.

The bus that was being driven by sears belongs to the Region 10 Tourism Committee. Sears was the Chairman of the Committee, but has since tendered his resignation.
