GDF ranks deployed to assist Police in clearing West Coast Berbice roads as protests continue

Ranks from the Guyana Defence Force have been deployed to the West Coast of Berbice to assist the Police in the clearing of the roadways as villagers continue their protest against the gruesome murder of teenage cousins, Joel and Isaiah Henry.

The Police Force in a statement said the decision to deploy the GDF to assist the Police came following a meeting of the Heads of the Joint Services.

“These protests are illegal and represent a threat to the public safety of other Guyanese traversing the roadways”, the Police Force said in its statement.

The Force noted also that the gathering of protestors is a clear violation of the Covid-19 guidelines set out by the Government to mitigate the effects and spread of the global pandemic and therefore persons are reminded to adhere to the guidelines to safeguard their lives, their families and others.

“Should the current situation persist, the GPF will have no alternative but to escalate its response to having the roadways cleared and ensure the return of law and order in the affected communities” the statement said.

The Police Force’s Public Relations Department said the Force wants residents to remain calm as the investigations are ongoing, reminding that persons are in custody and being questioned about the gruesome crime.

The mutilated bodies of the teenagers were found on Sunday in the backdam of Cotton Tree, one day after they were reported missing.

The double murder has led to widespread condemnation and calls for a thorough investigation.
