The Guyana Defence Force on Tuesday issued a warning against persons flying their aerial “drone” gadgets near to military bases and in airspace allocated to low flying aircraft.
The warning comes after a remote controlled “drone” missed a collision with an army helicopter and followed the helicopter as it approached landing at the GDF headquarters.
In a statement, the GDF said that “at the time of the incident, the helicopter was making its final approach to Camp Ayanganna, overhead Thomas Lands, in the vicinity of Queens College and the National Park. It was reported by the Pilot that the Drone flew dangerously close to helicopter and also attempted to follow the aircraft.”
The Guyana Defence Force said it has noted with concern, the frequency of Drones being flown in Georgetown, as well as other parts of the country, and it wishes to reiterate that “these devices can cause serious if not fatal accidents especially when they are being operated in the airspace allocated to low flying aircraft. Further, it is recommended that the public refrains from operating these devices in and around Base Camp Ayanganna and all other Military Bases.”
Many photographers and private individuals have been using the drones for their overhead photography and in some cases even surveillance of construction sites. Similar concerns have been expressed in a number of countries.
