The APNU+AFC coalition today said the Guyana Elections Commission must pronounce on the allegations of fraud committed at the elections that are being unearthed during the recount of votes.
Executive Member of the APNU+AFC Coalition, Joe Harmon in a statement today said the coalition has dispatched a number of letters to the Elections Commission on the cases of fraud uncovered during the recount.
He said while GECOM is still to reply to the Coalition’s letters, he believes the Commission must make its position known on the issue.
Mr. Harmon said “the Commission must with certainty make its position known on these issues that bring the credibility of over 90,000 votes into question”.
Harmon said the “issues of fraud” have been piling up and he pointed to several examples of anomalies that he believes raises issue about the credibility of the elections. He noted that there were lists found in wrong ballot boxes, a large number of unstamped ballots, ballots for one region found in another region’s boxes, and issues related to the votes of the Disciplined Services.
The APNU General Secretary said the coalition has also informed GECOM of missing ballot papers, persons voting without an ID Card or Oath of Identity, votes being cast for dead persons and votes being cast for persons who were out of the country on Elections day. According to Harmon, the issues cannot be dismissed or taken lightly and the Elections Commission must address them.
He accused the PPP nominated Commissioners on the Elections Commission of trying to delay the Commission’s consideration of issues of the alleged fraud. He also accused the PPP of attempting to change the narrative of what is being unearthed during the recount.
The APNU General Secretary reminded that it was PPP Candidate and Attorney Anil Nandlall who had declared that one issue of fraud would nullify an entire process.
The recount of votes has been ongoing for the past month at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre. Votes from all of the regions except Region 4 have been recounted.
The recount process is likely to be completed in the coming days.
Once it is completed, the Chief Elections Officer will have to prepare a report that will be submitted to the Commission for its consideration.
That report is expected to highlight the recount process, the tabulations, and complaints made.
