Government in receipt of other extradition requests -PS Roopchand tells Court

While on the witness stand in the Mohameds’ extradition hearing, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sharon Roopchand admitted that the extradition request for the Mohameds may not be the only extradition request that the Government of Guyana has received in recent months.

The Permanent Secretary spoke of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs receiving an extradition request on the 26th November 2025.

She did not go into details about the November 26 request or the person or persons it may be targeting.

Last year, the US issued sanctions against a Guyana Police Officer and two other Guyanese men along with two Colombian nationals over their alleged links to cocaine trafficking. Local authorities have been mum on whether any local probe into the US claims is taking place.

Opposition Leader and billionaire businessman, Azruddin Mohamed, who is currently before the Court along with his father fighting an extradition request by the United States in relation to alleged mail and wire fraud and money laundering and tax evasion, told News Source that the revelation in Court this morning supports his position that his extradition request and the Government’s haste to proceed with the matter may be politically motivated.

He said it is surprising that the Government may have received other extradition requests more than two months ago and has not acted on them, but the request against him and his father was acted on within days.

Meanwhile, the Mohameds have hired a Trinidadian senior Attorney who specializes in extradition matters to join their team.
