Days after the family of murdered biker Ricardo Fagundes aka “Paper Shorts” picketed the Criminal Investigations Department over the sloth of the Police investigations, President Irfaan Ali confirmed today that Guyana will seek regional assistance to solve the crime.
The Government is to reach out to the Regional Security System to probe the brazen execution which took place 17 months ago.
The Guyana Police Force has been coming under renewed pressure about its investigation of the murder in recent weeks following accusations by a Police Sergeant that there has been a Police cover-up of the murder.
The Guyana Police Force has been refuting the allegations. A city businessman and his security agent have also denied any involvement in the murder after they were named by the Police Sergeant as prime suspects.
The Police Sergeant was part of the initial investigation team probing the shooting death.
The Opposition and other groups have been calling on the Government to investigate the claims made by the Police Sergeant and to also have fresh eyes probing the murder of Ricardo Fagundes.
Fagundes was killed in a hail of gunfire just after he stepped out of the Palm Court nightspot. His murder was caught on surveillance video but his killers could not clearly be identified.
A few days after the murder, the getaway car was found burnt in a trail along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway and the case became an unsolved mystery.
During their protest on Friday, family member of Ricardo Fagundes called on the President to ensure a proper investigation of the murder.
They complained of being starved of information about the investigations and also said they too believe there has been a cover up in the murder probe.
Fagundes was a close associate of Roger Khan who spent 10 years in a US prison after pleading guilty to drug trafficking.
Khan was inside the Palm Court bar when his friend was gunned down on the outside.
