President Irfaan Ali has announced a partnership between the Guyana government and the United States of America to enhance security at the country’s ports of entry by introducing world-class scanners that can easily detect undeclared and under-declared items, as well prohibited items.
Speaking on the “Energy Perspectives’ podcast over the weekend, the President said the intervention is to ensure confidence int he country’s security at ports.
“We have just drafted a programme with the U.S on bringing in scanners, world-class scanners at all our port facilities and this would happen before the end of the year. So, let us say you are coming into Guyana, you fill up your customs form digitally, every bag must then go through the scanner and the legislation is needed there will be amendments with high fine for false declaration, and this is for everything coming in and going out” the President noted.

In addition to the ports of entry, the President is also hoping that that the system could be rolled out at port facilities as well, saying this will further bolster investment confidence and for the confidence for persons in the diaspora coming back.
“The systems must work, and this is very important, we want to build systems that work, systems that are modern, systems that add to accountability and transparency and systems that enables us to drive the economy forward,” the President noted.
Added to the eGates that have been installed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), an online Embarkation/Disembarkation (ED) form has also been introduced to further reduce processing times.
Travelers can complete the form before arrival, and kiosks with staff support will be available for those unfamiliar with the process. The President said these interventions are to ensure the smooth flow of traffic through the airport, given that there has been a sharp rise in persons using the airport.
