GPHC launches internal probe after patient leaps to death from Medical ward

An investigation is underway at the Georgetown Public Hospital after a patient jumped to her death from the female medical ward, which is located on the third floor of a building.  The woman, who family members identified as Marissa Eastman, was also pregnant, according to relatives.

The woman was admitted to the hospital on Sunday after she was rushed there with multiple complaints and was behaving erratically.

Family members said she was admitted and they were told that she would have to be monitored and closely observed.

They received a call from the hospital on Sunday night, informing them that the young woman had died after reportedly leaping from a window in the building.

In a statement this morning, the Georgetown Hospital announced that it will be conduting a full internal investigation.  The hospital claims that when the woman was admitted, a psychiatric evaluation was done, but there was no psychotic symptoms or suicidal thoughts identified.

However, the same woman made a video post on social media from the hospital threatening to harm herself.

A number of hospital staffers including medical practitioners are to be questioned as part of the investigations.

The GPHC has said that as part of the investigation process, the hospital will also review existing protocols related to patient observation and mental health monitoring, including suicide watch policies, to identify any areas for strengthening patient safety.
