Granger lost for words over comparison to Hitler and Saddam Hussein

The Political campaign season may only now be getting started but Opposition Leader David Granger is expressing shock over the distribution of flyers in certain parts of the country, which compares him to Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein.

Both Hitler and Saddam Hussein were dictators who murdered their own people.

The flyers have been distributed in many amerindian and east indian communities across the country and is being seen as “vile” attempt by activists of the governing People’s Progressive Party to create fear among the population.

The flyer has also been making the rounds on social media. In response to a question raised by News Source at his Friday press conference, Mr. Granger said he had not seen the flyer but he expressed shock that such a comparison would ever be made.

“I cant believe that. Who would do such a vile thing? I am lost for words because I can’t imagine any self respecting political party in Guyana would compare a politician, a Guyanese politician who has never been convicted of an offence, with Adolf Hitler, a mass murderer”.

Granger said he cannot believe that a political party would “stoop so low” to produce such a poster.

On the flyer, a photograph of Granger who is a retired Brigadier of the Guyana Defence Force, is positioned in the middle of photographs of Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein, all dressed in military uniforms. The flyer asks the question “Is Guyana ready for a military dictator?”.

The distribution of the flyer has created a storm in several discussion groups on Facebook with many persons criticizing the comparison and describing it as a new low level in Guyanese politics.

Just recently, the government’s chief spokesman, Dr. Roger Luncheon raised the issue of the APNU having a number of former military officers in its membership.

The Opposition Leader reminded that it was the PPP government that took a former military officer who was court martialed and made him a Minister of Home Affairs, referring to former Minister Ronald Gajraj who currently serves as Guyana’s Ambassador to India.

Granger said he is astonished by Luncheon’s “ignorance” and wants to know why he is not also raising concern about the number of former senior military officers currently in the employ of the government and the Office of the President.

“He has got all of the Generals, I just have one and one Colonels”, Granger said.
