GTT crosses milestone of providing Fibre internet service to more than 100,000 customers in months

Local telecommunications company GTT is celebrating the milestone of rolling out its Fibre internet service to more than 100,000 customers and within the coming months, the company will be pushing to roll out the high-speed fibre internet service to thousands more.

At a press conference this afternoon to celebrate the milestone and the company surpassing its own expectations, GTT’s Chief Operations Officer for Home and Fixed Services, Eshwar Thukurdin said the company is now on its way to covering close to half of all households by the end of this year.

“So, What does 100k homes pass mean for the people of Guyana ? Simply put, it means that GTT is keeping our promises to reliably connect our customers, innovate for all in the country and strengthen communities. We are on the road to upgrading our infrastructure as a part of our mission to pivot GTT to become a 21st century customer centric organization. Having reliable internet connection has become a part of our lifestyle and an essential form of communication and source of learning, development and entertainment. Reaching 100k homes means access for more families, especially in a post pandemic world where so many businesses and learning centers are utilising the internet for everyday interactions and transactions. It means accelerated digital transformation and that there is a solid platform to support the government’s Egovernance efforts and Ecommerce for the private sector.  It is no longer a want or a wish, the internet is a necessity, and we are leading the way in connecting homes and businesses and community by community, we will ensure we continue to increase that access across Guyana”, he said.

Mr. Thakurdin also indicated that GTT plans to roll out additional billions in investment in the coming years to not only expand its service, but to also improve on its quality.

“Imagine us 24 months ahead, in 2024 and be assured, GTT will roll-out fibre to cover an additional 80k homes. That’s 75% of homes & businesses in Guyana or every three in four, will have access to reliable fibre internet by GTT. We’ve invested over G$22 Billion to date, with a projected G$10Billion slated for the coming 2 years.”

In an age of local content, the Chief Operations Officer said the company is also proud to boast that 90% of its technicians and engineers in the fibre builds and installation are Guyanese, and it is a team that is growing.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips in celebrating the significant milestone for the company, noted that it was just two years ago that he inked the liberalisation of the telecoms sector in Guyana, and he believes the move has opened new doors for companies to expand, like GTT has been doing.

Prime Minister Phillips said “in today’s technology driven world, ensuring equitable access to ICT for all is essential. We have seen the consequences of a lack of access to these services during the COVID-19 pandemic. For many, ICTs became a primary communication channel”.

The Prime Minister said the breaking up of the monopoly should have been done much earlier.

GTT has indicated that it will be rolling out new and additional services in the coming weeks and months that will target both residential and business customers. The company said it also intends to soon announce a major initiative aimed at ensuring better quality internet in the Essequibo coast region.
