Guyana and St. Kitts-Nevis commit to cooperation in Security, Agriculture and Government Modernization

The Governments of Guyana and St. Kitts-Nevis have signed three Memoranda of Understanding, as the two CARICOM nations seek to deepen ties.

The signing of the MOUs paves the way for the countries to strengthen their collaboration in Security, Agriculture and Food Security and Government modernization.

On security, the MOU provides a framework for bilateral cooperation between Guyana and St. Kitts-Nevis in areas of non-lethal defence and security cooperation.

That MOU was signed by the Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, and Commander of the St, Kitts and Nevis army, Kayode Sutton.

In Agriculture, the MOU will promote and strengthen cooperation and collaboration in the areas of Agriculture and food security, through the development of a strategic partnership for the mutual benefit of both countries and the wider Caribbean.

On Government modernization, it is envisioned that both governments will work together to enhance wider Government capabilities and performance systems across Ministries and Government entities.

In addition to the MOUs, President Ali also formally welcomed St. Kitts-Nevis as a member of the Global Biodiversity Alliance—the international, voluntary platform launched in July 2025 by Guyana to unite biodiversity-rich nations, indigenous leaders, and partners to combat biodiversity loss.

“We welcome you as a member of the global biodiversity alliance and to say to you that you are now part of this massive undertaking in safeguarding biodiversity that is linked to the survival of our pharmaceutical industry, linked to the survival of culture, heritage and of course, the survival of our planet, at a time when in the last 50 years we have lost more than 60% our biodiversity, today you are part of this movement to protect and rebuild this great asset of our world,” the President noted.

The Prime Minister of St. Kitts-Nevis, Dr. Terrence Drew, said his country is pleased to be part of the Alliance, adding that biodiversity forms part of his country’s agenda.

“We want to create a sustainable island state and biodiversity is fundamental to that, for it is only natural that we be part of this, you know a lot of our pharmaceuticals come from the earth and the land and therefore biodiversity is critically important to ensure that we continue to discover those pharmaceuticals,” Dr. Drew noted.

The St. Kitts-Nevis Prime Minister and a team were in Guyana on an official visit on Wednesday.
