The online Guyana Passport application portal is expected to be activated within a month, paving the way for Guyanese at home and aboard to access passport services from the comfort of their homes.
In an interview with reporters on Wednesday, President Irfaan Ali explained that a number of the back end processes are being completed to facilitate the capture of biometric data.
“There are a number of things that have to be completed. You know that we have Guyanese all over the world, so, right now, if you want visa for some countries you have to do biometrics. So, they are now completing that relationship and I would say that within a month we should be closer to that,” the President said.
In September 2025, the President had said that the application portal was being tested, and would have gone live by the end of 2025.
It is anticipated that the online passport service will eliminate the long lines at Passport Offices, particularly in Georgetown.
The service would also complement the recently launched Border Control and E-gate System as well as the E-passport System.
President Ali said across the Public Sector, the Government is making significant progress as it aggressively rolls out its national digital transformation agenda.
The Government has already commenced work on electronic birth certificates and death certificates, with systems being migrated to digital platforms to ensure faster processing and greater transparency.
In the case of the National Payment System, the President said it is far advanced.
“We are also working on the national payment system. So, we are advancing work on the national payment system, with the e-wallet. I know many banks are ready to launch theirs, and in the coming days, I think we will be launching some from some of the banks,” he said.
President Ali said the Government is pursuing technology at a speed that would allow the country to propel among its competitors.
