Deputy Chief Immigration Officer, Stephen Telford, has announced that passport applications will be done by appointment only via the online application appointment system.
The new system comes months after the roll out of the e-appointment and e-passport application system. The digital system allows persons to fill out applications, upload necessary documents, and schedule appointments for biometric enrollment.
“We will no longer be accepting persons at one of the passport offices with persons walking in with their applications. So, you will now only be dealt with by an appointment and that in itself allows the applicant in the application process to choose which one of the passport offices you want to do your application as well as a date and a time that is convenient to you,” Telford explained.
Telford said the initiative forms part of the Passport office’s agenda to modernize its services, even as he warned against fraudulent portals.
With the new appointment system, the in-person application process will not be in place.
The time to uplift passports will also be reduced to three working days, and persons who pay for the expedited service can receive their passport within 24 hours.
In addition, the Passport office has introduced a home-service to cater for the elderly and differently-abled persons.
