Guyana eyeing Category 1 status after successful international audit

The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority is preparing to start engaging the Federal Aviation Administration of the United States to be granted Category One status for the country.

A Category One status would allow direct flights between Guyana and the United States of carriers other than U.S owned airlines.

The move by the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority comes on the heels of the Cheddi Jagan Airport receiving a high grade in its latest audit by the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

At a press conference today, the Director-General of Civil Aviation, Egbert Field, said with the 76.96% score obtained by Guyana, the country has now cemented itself in the 4th position in CARICOM for effective implementation of the Standards and Recommended Practices of the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

“During a post-audit brief, the ICAO Audit team revealed that the GCAA is on the right path and only needs to continue and the Civil Aviation ACT 2018 is one of the best ACS seen in the North and Central American Region and can be used as a model by other states”.

Mr. Field said the findings of the audit has strengthened Guyana’s case for category one status and the FAA has already offered its assistance to Guyana in its preparations to apply for that status.

“We have commenced discussions with the FAA reference to category one and they responded and they said they are willing to assist us through our moves to obtain category one status. To do that, they are willing to send a team as soon as we give them the okay, send a team into assess our situation, to assess where we are so that if there are any gaps, we can fill them”.

The GCAA Director-General also announced that a recent security audit conducted by the US Transportation Security Administration has also given Guyana passing marks with no security concerns being found at the Cheddi Jagan Airport and the Eugene Correia Airport.
