GWI hit and run driver on $2M bail for causing death

City Magistrate Judy Latchman on Thursday granted a driver attached to the Guyana Water Incorporated bail in the sum of $2 Million for causing death by dangerous driving. He is blamed for the death of food vendor Claude McPherson.

The GWI driver, Shawn Ramai of Norton Street, Georgetown pleaded not guilty to the charge but was slapped with the $2 Million bail plus additional charges.

The prosecution’s case is that on Wednesday, February 26, Ramai drove his vehicle in a dangerous manner and hit down and killed Mcpherson and drove away from the scene.

He parked the vehicle which is registered to GWI in the company’s compound and reported that he was involved in an accident with an animal. It was not until relatives of the dead man and eyewitnesses of the accident spotted the vehicle parked in the GWI compound that it was realized that Ramai was involved in the hit and run.

He could not be reached immediately but eventually turned himself over to Police in the company of an attorney. He is expected to make his next court appearance later this month.
