Head of Police Narcotics being transferred to Berbice as missing cocaine probe continues

The Guyana Police Force has confirmed that it has removed Superintendent Wayne DeHearte as Head of the Narcotics Branch and transferred him to the Berbice area.

The move comes as the Office of Professional Responsibility probes the disappearance of over two pounds of cocaine from the evidence room at the Narcotics Branch.

Although Superintendent DeHearte has not been fingered in any wrongdoing in relation to the cocaine’s disappearance, the OPR, according to Police sources, is of the view that he should have had better security arrangements in place to safeguard and secure the evidence area.

DeHearte has been a member of the Guyana Police Force for the past 14 years and has an unblemished record.

He is considered by many of his peers, as one of the most promising young Senior officers of the Force. He only recently returned from three months of vacation leave and it is suspected that during his absence, duplicates were made to some of the keys that accessed the evidence room and other rooms in the Narcotics division.

News Source understands that several officers had access to the evidence room where the cocaine was stored. Sources close to the investigators believe one of the ranks may have removed the cocaine evidence to impact the case against a Plaisance businessman who was on Friday charged for drug trafficking. The businessman has been linked to the supply of cocaine to an ex-policeman and several other persons who made efforts to ferry cocaine through the airport.

It is unclear who will now be heading the Police Narcotics Division in Dehearte’s absence. It is also unclear what role he will be playing in the Berbice division. He is expected to turn out for work on Monday in Berbice.
