Hypertension and Diabetes are leading factors in Guyana COVID-19 deaths

A preliminary study by the Ministry of Health in Guyana has found that non-communicable diseases, diabetes, and hypertension were the leading contributing factors in persons who succumbed to COVID-19.

Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony today revealed that a study of 202 of the more than 455 deaths has found that more than 30% of the patients who died suffered from hypertension while 28% were diabetic.

The other co-morbidities that may have contributed to the COVID deaths include kidney disease and heart ailments.

In its study of the 202 deaths, the Ministry of Health also found that 36.6% of those persons were Afro-Guyanese while 28.2% were Amerindians and 23.3% were Indo-Guyanese.

Persons identified as being of mixed race represented 11.4% of the COVID deaths.

The Health Minister said it is very important for persons to get vaccinated so that they could be protected against COVID-19.

He said no fully vaccinated person has been hospitalised with COVID-19 and there has been no recorded death of any fully vaccinated person.

The Ministry of Health is also worried that there appears to be a slowdown in the number of people getting vaccinated.

Dr. Anthony said the trend was first noticed during the recent floods across the country but the number has not been improving since.

Meanwhile, the Health Minister also announced today that the Government has completed payment for the Johnson & Johnson one-shot vaccine and is expecting the delivery soon.

When the vaccine arrives, it will become the fourth COVID-19 vaccine to be administered in Guyana.
