Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo today said he has started to look at new names to make up a list of nominees for the position of Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission and he intends to also look outside of Guyana for possible nominees.
Speaking at his press conference this afternoon, the Opposition Leader said the Constitution allows for a citizen of The Commonwealth to be among nominees for the top election post and it is not something he is opposed to.
Jagdeo said he is hoping that the President will look at the eighteen names that were previously rejected, but in case he still does not find favour with any of those nominees, a new list will be presented.
The Caribbean Court of Justice earlier this month ruled that the President’s 2017 appointment of a GECOM Chairman was flawed and was against the Constitution. The GECOM Chairman who was appointed by the President has since demitted office and that paves the way for a new Chairman to be appointed.
The President and the Opposition Leader have both indicated their readiness to meet on the GECOM Chairman appointment.
