Jagdeo warns supporters against being “misled” by claims of corruption in Government and ignoring of progress

Vice President, and General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), Bharrat Jagdeo, in a rallying call, is urging his supporters and the rest of the country not to be misled by the political rhetoric of the Opposition.

Addressing his party supporters at a memorial rally for late President Cheddi Jagan, Mr. Jagdeo was in full campaign mode, telling his supporters that the Opposition has been playing with the emotions of citizens as a tactic to get them to express dissatisfaction with the government.

“They touch you in your hearts, they say the things that people can willingly forgo and ignore all the progress that the country is making, because they touched the emotive issues,” the PPP/C General Secretary said.

While declaring the PPP/C as a party for all, Vice President Jagdeo accused the Opposition of trying to divide the nation with the issue of race.

“The people of the country suffered. Contrast that with the PPP. If you look at this crowd, if you look at our activities, if you look at our programme, and that’s the worst nightmare for APNU, that all of our people, right across Guyana, in spite of their race, they are benefiting from the People’s Progressive Party/Civic. That’s a fundamental difference between us. And some people may believe that APNU is fighting for us; they are not fighting for you, they are fighting for themselves. The only party that you can find a home in, if you are Afro-Guyanese or Amerindian or mix, or Indo-Guyanese, that would ensure you and your children see progress, sustainable progress is the People’s Progressive Party,” the PPP/C General Secretary said.

Mr. Jagdeo also dismissed accusations of corrupt practices in the Government. He described those accusations as “lies”.

“Some of our own people start repeating the same lies without seeing the bigger motive, that it is political in nature,” he said, while launching an attack on two of nation’s national newspapers for publishing opposing views.

Jagdeo said too many Guyanese are being led into believing that they are not benefiting from the country’s oil resources, He said the Government has been investing heavily in the development of the country, and the advancement of its people through education, while providing critical social services.

“Norton keeps saying, we should give US$5M a year. Well, that would be 20 times more than we are collecting from the oil and gas sector now; 20 times more he wants us to give to people than we are collecting from the sector but you can see these figures. It sounds good, and many of our people are saying, where the oil money deh, where the oil money deh, me ain’t getting no oil money. So, if you don’t understand these kinds of things, then we will be in big, big trouble,” he reasoned.

Jagdeo warned that if the people are not conscious of the tactics employed by the Opposition, the country could fall prey to the Coalition as was the case in 2015, when the PPP/C lost the elections.
