Setting off loud jubilation by soldiers at Camp Ayanganna this afternoon, President Irfaan Ali announced the return of the one month’s salary tax-free bonus for members of the Joint Services.
During his address to members of the GDF who are based at the headquarters of the Force, the President said members of the Joint Services have been on the frontline protecting Guyana and are deserving of the tax-free bonus.
“I want this to be clear to all who are listening. We are not returning the one-month tax-free bonus for any other reason than because you deserve it and you have worked hard for it and for those in our society who believe you can just take things away and take things away from our soldiers, I challenge them to go to some of the places you go and spend a year away from your families”, the President said as the soldiers cheered loudly.
The year-end bonus for members of the Joint Services was discontinued under the previous government as it offered smaller bonuses to all public servants including the joint services during its first two years.
President Ali said moving forward, his government will continue with its efforts to improve the lives of members of the military and other joint services. He said already, more scholarships are being offered and he would like to see more members of the joint services taking full advantage of the government’s scholarship programmes.
