Parliamentary Committee makes nominations for Police Service Commission

The Parliamentary Committee of Appointments headed by the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs has nominated four persons to sit on the new Police Service Commission.

The Committee has submitted its report and has informed the National Assembly that it has meaningfully consulted with the Guyana Police Association, the Association of Former Members of the Guyana Police Force, and the National Community Policing Executive, as bodies that appear to represent the majority of Members of the Guyana Police Force, on the persons who were nominated by the National Assembly to sit on the Police Service Commission.

Those who have been nominated and recommended to sit on the new Police Service Commission are Businessman Ernesto Choo-a-Fat, Attorneys Lloyd Mark Conway and Hakeem Mohamed and Bishop Patrick Anthony Findlay.

The four men were nominated by the Guyana Police Association and the nominations were accepted by the Parliamentary Committee.

A Chairman of the Commission will now have to be named but that process involves consultation between the President and the Opposition Leader.

The President since taking office has refused to consult with the Opposition Leader, saying that the Opposition Leader needs to first acknowledge him as the legitimate President.

The life of the last Police Service Commission came to a tumultuous end last August. Members of the last Commission including its Chairman were all suspended by the President.

The President was accused of attempting to influence the work of the Police Service Commission with the former Chairman Paul Slowe, detailing several exchanges he had with the President.
