New York based Guyanese singer, Lisa Punch will be representing Guyana at this year’s Miss World Pageant in Sanya, China.
Punch who is better known on the local stage for her singing voice rather than for her catwalk moves, was selected at a glitzy special invitees only “Coronation” event at the Guyana Marriott Hotel on Friday night.
The Miss Guyana World Committee kept the decision to crown Lisa Punch a secret for weeks. The decision to select a queen rather than host the pageant came as a result of the poor response to the committee’s invitation for participants in the pageant.
Added to that, the committee also found itself unable to secure enough sponsorship to host a glitzy pageant.
The Miss World pageant allows for the selection of queens. Lisa Punch is well known across Guyana for her strong singing voice and has released a number of singles and an album. She currently lives in Brooklyn, New York with her family.
Back in 2014, she shot to temporary stardom on U.S network tv when she made it to the third round of the Rising Star reality show on the ABC TV Network.
Some pageant watchers were clearly shocked by the decision based on their reaction on Facebook and Twitter after the announcement was made that Punch was crowned Queen. Many of them said that while Lisa Punch is well known, they do not believe she has had enough experience to take on the pageant world.
One pageant follower commented that while Lisa Punch’s selection as Miss Guyana World will boost the pageant and “maintain its relevance”, it is a backward step for Lisa who many believe should be focusing more on developing her singing career.
Punch has never competed in any major local pageant. She was once a competitor along with her mom in the Mother and Daughter show.
But the Miss World Franchise pays lots of attention to talent and the Committee is hopeful that coupled with the training they will offer, her singing talent will be enough to land her a space among the Miss World finalists.
