Local Government Minister meets Mayor and City Councillors on Georgetown revival plan

Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, met today with Georgetown Mayor, Alfred Mentore and City Councilors to discuss ongoing efforts to enhance the capital city’s image.

President Irfaan Ali recently announced a city revival plan, which is expected to transform the city.

Today’s meeting sought to provide a pathway forward to supplement that plan.

In an invited comment after the meeting, the Georgetown Mayor said the time has come for greater collaboration between the Government and the City Council to provide services to the residents of Georgetown.

“It is important that we do so because at the end of the day we are servants of the people, both the Ministry and the Council and we have a mandate to able to keep the city clean and provide the necessary service whether its drainage or otherwise and to deliver to them that service that is required,” the Mayor said.

Mr. Mentore said the time for playing politics in the city is over, adding that he is prepared along with the Council to work with all stakeholders, including the Government to turn the city around.

“We will work for the people regardless of politics, the decision to do that is to be able to bring about the cleanliness and provide services to persons and we have decided to work on that and give that a chance and deliver to the people,” said.

A brief statement from the Local government Ministry said Minister Manickchand emphasized that the work goes far beyond sanitation and physical cleanliness. She noted that there must be a new culture in the delivery of service for the residents of the city and the city’s infrastructure.

“It’s more than just sanitation. It’s how we welcome people and treat people. It’s how they feel when they come into our city.”

The Local Government Minister has been visiting markets and other areas in the city to examine the needs of the city. Today’s meeting with the City Council examined many of those needs.
