Declaring that the Ministry of Local Government wants to work with vendors and ensure that they are comfortable, the Minister of Local Government, Priya Manickchand, kick-started the “Cleaner Market” initiative on Monday evening by placing garbage bins around the Stabroek Market Square.
The installation of the bins stretches from Brickdam, starting at the Head of Avenue of the Republic all the way down to Stabroek Stelling, and continues along Lombard Street in the vicinity of the market, extends along Water Street from Stabroek Market to America Street, and runs alongside the perimeter of the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.
Speaking during an engagement with the vendors last night, Minister Manickchand said the bins are intended to provide consistent and convenient waste disposal points, reducing littering and ensuring that waste is contained rather than scattered throughout the market space.
“We are going to work with each other and work on each other to change out the bad habit that we have come to know, the bad habits of littering, because the next step if that doesn’t would be what we call enforcement and enforcement has consequences, it means we have to bring people and when you drop paper we have to use the laws ands courts and we have to use fines, but I don’t want that for you and you don’t want that for you,” the Minister implore.

Ms. Manickchand said a new culture has to be developed around the Market square, where proper waste disposal is taken seriously.
She expressed confidence that there will be full cooperation by vendors and those who use the market square.
“We put the bins and twice a day from 3-6 in the morning and from 1-3 in the afternoon, a truck will come through and porters will pick up the garbage from the bins. So, you have no reason to work in filth anymore,” the Minister stated.
According to the Minister, the Stabroek Market initiative should serve as a model for other markets across the country.
“This square here will show the rest of the country, how it can be done. This is the square that change starts, it is here at Stabroek that change will start and President Ali has some amazing plan for this market, waterfront beautiful municipal market, places you would want to invest in and places people would want to come and shop in,” the Minister stated.
She described the initative as part of a Clean and Green Guyana push.
