Longtime PNCR Executive Member Mervyn Williams resigns live on NationWatch

Longtime Executive Member of the People’s National Congress Reform, Mervyn Williams, resigned from the party dramatically live at the end of the Nation Watch broadcast programme this morning.

Williams announced his surprise resignation from the Executive and the party at the end of an interview with businessman and soon to be APNU Member of Parliament, Terrence Campbell. He has been the host of the party’s Nation Watch programme for the past few years.

Williams reminded that at the last PNCR Congress, he secured the second highest number of votes, as he thanked the party’s leadership and membership for reposing confidence in him over the years. However, he stated that it was time for him to move on as he has reached the end of the road in the party.

“It was a difficult decision, but the circumstances dictate that I take this decision, and it is one that I contemplated in the run up to September 1 (election day), but my duty, commitment and loyalty to party did not allow me to do that and I held my hand and there were unfortunate occurrences after September 1, in fact, one of those two occurrences predates September 1, but came to my attention after. Having regard to those sets of circumstances and recognizing the need for the party to go through its rebuilding process, I had a good run”, he said.

He said over the years, he has only experienced love from the party and its membership, while offering no other detail on the reason behind his sudden resignation. Williams said he has reached the point in the road where he must say goodbye, promising to continue to make representation for the people of Guyana even while out of the PNC Reform.

News Source understands that the resignation shocked the leadership and membership of the PNC Reform, which is still licking its bruises from the party’s worst defeat in its history at the recent elections.

The programme was yanked from the party’s social media pages and according to a source, the party’s whatsapp groups were busy as senior party officials sought information about the possible reason that triggered the resignation of Williams.

The PNC-led APNU only secured 12 seats in the 65 member National Assembly and has been shoved from the position of main opposition party.

The party will be heading into the National Assembly with a number of new faces. There have been calls for PNC Reform Leader, Aubrey Norton to tender his resignation in wake of the loss at the elections.
