The Guyana Police Force has announced that it is investigating the murder of 50-year-old miner Gregory Gibson, who died after being beaten with a piece of wood by another miner during an argument over money.
According to a Police report, the incident took place on Sunday morning around 5:30 at Blackwater Landing in the Potaro area.
“Investigations have revealed that Gregory Gibson was involved in an argument over money with another man, during which he was struck to his head with a piece of wood. He was pronounced DOA at the Mahdia Hospital”, the Police statement said.
The suspect in the matter is still to be arrested. The dead miner hailed from the Essequibo community of Bush Lot. In the past year, there has been an upsurge in violent crimes and incidents in the mining community. Some miners groups have issued a call for more police outposts to be set up in mining areas and for there to be more police patrols.
