Mining Safety concerns increase after latest mining deaths

Another mining pit tragedy in the country has claimed the lives of two gold miners.

The latest incident took place on Friday in the Kumung Backdam in the Puruni area, Region Seven.

Investigators have identified the two dead men as 44-year-old Troy Scott from Linden and 32-year-old Seon Martin from Lethem.

Investigations have revealed the 25-foot deep mining pit operating jetting equipment when the land suddenly started to cave in, trapping the two miners underground.

Other workers who were nearby managed to escape and by the time they dug the pit and got to the two men, they discovered their lifeless bodies.

The Police said the bodies were examined and multiple abrasions were seen on both bodies. A post-mortem examination is to be conducted on the tragedy.

There has been been a number of recorded mining deaths since the start of this year.  The Labour Department has been pressing miners to employ safer mining practices.

The mining operation where the tragedy occurred is owned by businessman Rhyburn Elcock of Rahaman’s Park.
