Ministry of the Presidency’s Communications Director turns down NCN Board appointment

The Director of Communications and Media Relations at the Ministry of the Presidency, Mark Archer, has turned down an appointment to serve on the Board of the National Communications Network.

Mr. Archer wrote Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, indicating that because of his work commitment at the Ministry of the Presidency, he would be unable to take up the appointment.

During Wednesday’s post-cabinet press briefing, Mr. Archer confirmed that he turned down the appointment and said it was based solely on his responsibilities as the Director for the President’s Communications and Media relations Department.

However, News Source understands that Archer, who is an APNU member, has been having problems with the Director of Public Information in the Office of the Prime Minister, Imran Khan, who comes from the AFC,  about the way Khan has been seeking to direct and offer instructions to the state media.

Khan has also been appointed to boards of both the National Communications Network and the Guyana Chronicle.

When asked directly if his decision to turn down the appointment was because of differences with Khan, Archer denied that, but offered no other comment.

When contacted by News Source, Mr. Khan said that Mr. Archer wrote to the PM and the Chairman of the NCN board indicating that he is unable to serve due to his work commitments.

Sources close to the Office of the Prime Minister have reported to News Source that Khan had serious issues with Archer still wanting to gather information on the state of the state media, although the state media falls under the portfolio of the Office of the Prime Minister.
