Still reeling from the prison break that left a prison officer dead and most of the Camp Street jail gutted, and another prison break just after at Lusignan, the Guyana Prison Service has found itself launching another investigation into the presence of illegal items at the at the only building left standing in the Camp Street jail where prisoners are still being housed.
During a joint operation at the jailhouse yesterday, a small potion of cannabis, three cell phones along with three digicel SIM cards, four lighters, twenty improvise weapons and three razor blades were found.
The prisoners being housed there would have been transferred from the Lusignan jail, where they were temporarily housed and would have therefore gone through security checks.
It is suspected that items may have been smuggled into the jailhouse, despite the increased security presence.
And in New Amsterdam, there are also reports that a Prison officer was stabbed to one of his arms as he sought to break up a fight between inmates on Wednesday.
The two incidents have reignited concerns about prison security and whether some Prison Officers are still involved in the smuggling of illegal items into the prison, even in wake of losing a colleague on the job.
