Less than 30 minutes after he jumped the fence and escaped from the New Amsterdam Prison, convicted prisoner Rei Joseph was recaptured and taken back into custody.

A report from the Guyana Prison Service stated that at around 6:51am today, the prisoner was noticed scaling the fence of the jailhouse. An alarm was immediately raised as he bolted for his freedom.

By 7:10 he was recaptured in a neighbouring community and immediately taken back into custody.

The Guyana Prison Service and the Guyana Police Force have launched investigations into the incident.

The man was serving a 15-month jail sentence for simple larceny and was listed to be released from prison in December.

He is now expected to face a charge of escaping from prison and that could keep him in jail for the holidays and into the new year.
