Two months after he was fired by the Board of Directors of the state-owned Guyana Chronicle, Sherod Duncan is likely to be reinstated as the General Manager of the company following the intervention of Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo.

The Chairman of the Board of the Guyana Chronicle, Geeta Chandan-Edmond today received a letter from the Prime Minister instructing the Board to rescind its decision to part ways with Duncan.

News Source understands that the Board Chairman and other members were caught by surprise by the Prime Minister’s actions and the Chairman along with at least two other members have indicated that they intend to resign from their positions on the Chronicle’s Board.

Reports reaching News Source have revealed that Board Members Hilbert Foster and Mervyn Williams have both made it clear that they do not intend to continue serving on the Board following the Prime Minister’s instructions.

The Chairman of the Board is taking a similar position.

It was back in April that the Board made a majority decision to fire Duncan following the findings of an audit that revealed several improper financial transactions by Duncan that went against the company’s financial regulations.

When the vote was taken on whether to dismiss Duncan, three board members voted in favour of cutting ties with him, while three others voted against. It was the Board’s Chairman who broke the tie by siding with the three who were in favour of letting him go.

Duncan who once served as Deputy Mayor of Georgetown was recently elected the Georgetown Chairman of the Alliance For Change, which is part of the coalition government.

Since the coalition came to office in 2015, Duncan has hopscotched around various government jobs from working with the Department of Information to serving as the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Business.

His appointment as Chronicle General Manager was covered in controversy as he was a serving Member of the Chronicle’s Board when a decision was made to make him the General Manager, although it was felt that far more qualified applicants were in place.
