National Assembly approves $3.4 Billion in funding for elections

With the opposition PPP still boycotting sittings of the National Assembly, the Government went ahead and approved the $3.4 Billion for the Guyana Elections Commission for the hosting of the next national elections in Guyana.

Finance Minister Winston Jordan told the National Assembly this afternoon that the provision is not in anticipation of any ruling by the Caribbean Court of Justice, but rather, it forms part of the commitment of President David Granger to the Guyana Elections Commission.

He said the provision covers over 99% of the amount that was requested by the Guyana Elections Commission.

A few months ago, President David Granger met with the Chairman and Commissioners of the Guyana Elections Commission. He requested and got documentation on GECOM’s preparedness for the hosting of the next general elections and its needs.

GECOM has said the $3.4 Billion will cover all of its expenses for the successful hosting of general and regional elections, whether those elections are hosted this year or next year.

The Commission has said that the earliest time that it could host elections would be at the end of November.
