Off-duty Presidential Guard dies in East Bank Demerara crash

An off-duty Police Corporal who was attached to the Presidential Guard Unit, lost his life early this morning after losing control of the Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle that he was driving at the time.

A Police statement said 24-year-old Kevin Narine was driving at a fast rate along the East Bank Demerara public road at Coverden when tragedy struck. There were three other persons in the vehicle at the time of the accident at around 6:20 this morning.

The Police statement said Narine was overtaking several vehicles which were proceeding in the same direction, when he lost control of the SUV and slammed into a utility pole.

The other persons were pulled from the vehicle, while assistance had to be sought from a truck to pull a part the vehicle to get the driver out since he was trapped.

The injured persons were all rushed to the Diamond hospital, where Narine was pronounced dead, while the others were treated for their injuries, with one being transferred to the Georgetown hospital.

An investigation into the accident is underway.
