Opposition calls on Auditor General to probe distribution of COVID Cash relief

Opposition Leader Joe Harmon issued a call today for the Auditor General to get up and get busy by investigating the Government’s Coronavirus cash grant relief and its distribution.

Mr. Harmon’s call come in wake of widespread complaints from all across the country of hundreds of citizens not getting the cash relief.

In some communities, citizens have complained that the persons distributing the cash grants would tell them that they are out of money before completing distribution to an entire community.

During his weekly press conference today, the Opposition Leader said there also appears to be some discrimination in the distribution in some areas.

“In this process, the PPP activists have been given or designated Distribution Agents and have been distributing the funds in this nakedly discriminatory manner. From what I hear, there is corruption in the distribution. The funds are public funds and that PPP hacks under the direction of bad boy Nigel (Minister of Local Government) will be held accountable for these funds”.

Harmon reminded that the COVID cash grant relief was approved by the National Assembly for the Ministry of Human Services. He said it is strange that the Ministry of Local Government has now been put in charge of the funds.

The Opposition Leader said there will be questioning on the distribution drive and those involved will have to give answers.

President Irfaan Ali was questioned on the complaints yesterday. He said he has heard the complaints. He said he has asked the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Human Services and the Auditor General’s office to look into the complaints.

The distribution of the cash grant relief has started in Region Four, with communities on the outskirts of the capital city being first in line to receive the grants. Complaints are already coming in from persons in those areas, questioning the fairness of the distribution.
