Opposition Leader accuses Government of implementing racist policies to divide Guyana into two separate states

Leader of the Opposition Joe Harmon has dismissed the letter sent by the Guyana Government to the US Congress and Diplomatic and International communities complaining about a recent anti-racism protest by Guyanese in New York.

In response to the letter signed by Governance Minister Gail Teixeira, the Opposition Leader said the Government can make all the statements it wants and write all the letters it wants, but cannot run away from the reality on the ground. He said the policies of the PPP are creating two different countries for Guyanese.

“Gail Teixeira can write all over, Jagdeo can go all over, Irfaan Ali can talk as much as he wants, Mark Phillips can talk as much as he wants, the reality in Guyana is different and I said it a few days ago, that their policies are creating two separate Guyanas and we have to work to bridge the gap rather than widening it and all of what they are doing, the resources that they are dolling out as if it’s their private property is going in one direction and when you do that to communities and when you prevent communities from developing in an even manner, when you are so dictatorial in your behaviour, when you do not have any equity whatsoever in what you are doing then certainly they will have to go and explain to the whole world what they are doing and they will have to do it every day”, the Opposition Leader said.

President Irfaan Ali

Mr. Harmon said the Opposition will continue to inform the international community about the actions of the PPP Civic government and how those affections appear to be against a particular group of people in the country.

In the correspondence to the US Congress, Minister Teixeira reflected on the APNU+AFC’s time in government and highlighted complaints about discrimination at that time.

The Opposition Leader said Minister Teixeira and the Government cannot blame the previous government for its current shortcomings and “acts of discrimination and racist behaviour” since it took office last August.

According to Mr. Harmon, the PPP Civic Government is “seeking to now lay blame on the APNU+AFC for the misbehaviour of this administration in Government. All of the firings of public servants, they are now seeking to say that we had them in there and they were incompetent and they had to fire them. I have never seen such an atrocious and sequacious argument like that”.

Harmon insisted that the PPP Government is embracing a “racist policy and this is. not good for Guyana”.

He noted that he has written to the President on the issues of concern, but the President has refused to acknowledge his letters.

The Opposition Leader believes the anti-racism rally in New York has awakened the international community to what is taking place in Guyana and the PPP Government must now change course.
