Under the theme “Rooted in Identity – Rising in Destiny,” the Office of the Leader of the Opposition has launched a Calendar of Activities to mark Guyana’s 60th Independence Anniversary, as it is seeks to “restore meaning, dignity and national pride to the country’s independence celebration”.
Opposition Member of Parliament for the WIN party, Odessa Primus, told reporters on Tuesday that the initiative is intended to restore meaning, dignity, and national pride to the observance of Guyana’s Independence anniversary by engaging citizens in a journey that honours the country’s past, examines its present, and inspires the collective future.
“Guyana’s independence is more than a date on the calendar; it is the culmination of sacrifice, resilience, and the enduring spirit of a people determined to define their own destiny. As such, this initiative moves beyond celebration alone, and instead presents a six week national programme designed to foster deeper awareness, unity and participation across all regions and communities,” MP Primus said.
MP Primus explained that the celebration will unfold in six phases that will highlight Guyana’s historical journey to Independence through storytelling, educational activities and national reflection, adding that it will also create spaces for dialogue on nationhood, values and the responsibilities of citizenship.
Through the celebrations, the Opposition Leader’s Office intends to celebrate the richness of Guyanese culture, traditions and creative expressions, and mobilize citizens through acts of service and community development.
The celebrations will culminate with a multi-stage production titled: “Dawn of a Nation- Guyana 60”.
“This landmark initiative will bring together threatre, music, culture and national reflection in a powerful showcase of Guyana’s journey, from struggle to sovereignty and from identity to destiny. Reigniting a spirit of unity, purpose, and pride that will carry us forward as one people, one nation, with one shared destiny,” MP Primus said.
According to member of the WIN party, Clayon Halley, the events are intended to ignite a national awakening. He said as the country approaches its 60th Independence Anniversary, Guyanese must reflect on its significance.
“Independence was never built on revelry. It was forged through struggle, sacrifice, vision and an unshakable belief that a people, diverse in origin, could become one nation with one destiny. And yet, in this significant milestone, there is growing concern among many Guyanese that the depth of our history is being overshadowed by surface-level celebration. That the meaning of independence risks being diluted into moments that entertain us but do not necessarily transform us,” Halley said.
He said while WIN is not condemning celebrations, Guyana deserves more. He reasoned that Guyana deserves moments that educate children about who they are, and moments that challenge its people to reflect and unite as one people.
“That is why this initiative, “Rooted in Identity, Rising in Destiny,” is so important. It is a call back to our foundation; a call to rediscover the strength of our identity; a call to rebuild a spirit of unity, resilience, and national pride. Because the truth is, our greatest resource is not oil, nor gold, nor land; it is our people. If we are to truly move forward as a nation, then we must invest not only in infrastructure but also in identity; not only in development but also in destiny,” Halley said.
The six weeks of activities include national essay and spoken word competitions, then and now online photo exhibitions, a national day of prayer, university talks, a youth forum, a Guyanese music week and a national unity march.
The activities will run parallel to activities being hosted by the Government in observance of the Guyana’s 60th Independence Anniversary.
