While assuring the nation that he has acted at all times in accordance with the Constitution and the Laws of Guyana, President David Granger in a statement this evening said the opposition PPP’s narrative on the elections is nothing more than a “falsification of reality”.

“The Opposition is disseminating a narrative that is no more than a falsification of reality. It is completely at variance with the official declarations of the Elections Commission for the ten electoral districts”, the President said.

Mr. Granger said he will not allow “political malefactors to hijack our democracy and compromise public order and human safety. Law and order will be maintained.”

His statement came less than an hour after the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted that he had discussions about a “democratic transition in Guyana” with the Canadian Deputy Prime Minister.

In his statement, President Granger reminded that the Guyana Elections Commission is an independent constitutional agency “over which I and the Executive have no control. I assure you, that as President, I cannot, did not and will not interfere in the work of GECOM.”

News Source understands that in some of their meetings with the President, some of the foreign observers and diplomats have been pressing him to reach out to GECOM on the matters that have now made their way to the Supreme Court.

The President has consistently told the observers and the diplomats that it would be unlawful for him to get involved in the work of GECOM and he will no do it.

The President in his statement this evening said the Opposition created an atmosphere of intimidation and fear at the office of the Returning Officer of District Number 4 and it was that which led to the interruption of GECOM’s work.

With the Opposition moving to the Court against GECOM, the President said the entire nation must await the ruling of the Supreme Court.

He also criticised the violent protests by PPP supporters in Berbice last Friday that led to school children and Police officers being injured by protesters.

“Guyanese, we have all witnessed the lawlessness and violence that have been unleashed on innocent school children, citizens and police officers in several districts of our country. Our security forces have been working to quell disorder and to bring the perpetrators to justice”.

In urging the nation to remain calm, President Granger said citizens should not engage in any activity which can lead to the heightening of tensions in society.

According to the President, “some damage has already been done to social relations in our communities. We must repair that damage”.

The President said he is confident that there will be a peaceful and lawful resolution to the electoral issue in a short period of time.

“I appeal to you to join me in allowing the judicial system to perform its functions. I appeal to you to allow the Elections Commission to execute its mandate to deliver credible elections to the Guyanese people”, he asked.

Today marked one week since Guyanese went to the polls. The final results of the elections have been put on hold as issues surrounding the verification and declaration of Region Four votes have now been taken to the Court.
