Having been given a second chance at gaining more qualifications to become job ready, more than 1400 persons crossed the stage of the National Cultural Centre today as they graduated from the Government’s “GROW” initiative.
At the graduation, President Irfaan Ali urged the hundreds of persons who completed the Get Ready for Opportunities to Work (GROW) initiative to pursue higher education.
“Today you are offered a renewed opportunity to further your studies in universities across the world and right here in Guyana, many of you would have been told that you did not have the entry requirements, today all of you have the entry requirement to pursue any university degree you wish to so do,’ the President assured.
The GROW programme was developed for persons who were unsuccessful at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate examinations, but hope to pursue higher learning.
“I urge you today to let this step in your education quest, be one that uplifts you personally, one that contributes to the upliftment of your community and ultimately one that uplifts our country and take our country, closer to greater prosperity,” the President said.
The President also urged the graduates to be careful in their decision making when choosing a career path.
He said the take off in the services and health sectors should be highly considered, as well as the technical fields.
“We want you to transition yourself to be able to participate in this sector of our economy. Secondly, we are building a healthcare system that requires tremendous human asset in nursing, medical care, caregivers and in deed there are tremendous global shortage in this field, I urge you to also examine the possibility in this field,” the President said.
Education Minister, Priya Manickand, said those who participated in the initiative now have opportunities that were not available to them previously.
She said they now have a second chance and with their new qualifications, they can pursue studies at a number of higher learning institutions including the University of Guyana and the Cyril Potter College of Education.
