The surge in COVID-19 cases and deaths in Guyana continued today as the Ministry of Health reported that 143 new cases were confirmed in the past 24 hours with more deaths.
The current death toll stands at 335 with 36 of those deaths recorded in the past 14 days.
Since the start of this month, the country has recorded more than 1700 new cases of coronavirus.
There are currently 1805 active cases of the virus in the country with 113 of those active cases hospitalized. It is the largest number of hospitalizations recorded since the pandemic was first reported in Guyana a year ago.
While it is still to confirm the presence of one of the new variants of the virus in the country, the Ministry of Health remains worried about the virus spreading faster and in more communities. There is also worry that more young people are becoming seriously ill with the virus.
With the numbers rising steadily over the past two and a half months, there continues to be calls for the Government to strengthen the enforcement of the COVID-19 measures before the situation worsens.
The Government continues to push its vaccination drive and more people are turning out to be vaccinated.
More than 35% of the population has received a first dose of one of the COVID vaccines. Many persons are expected to return for their second dose in the coming days.
