Over 60 lbs cocaine busted in Greece in scrap iron shipment from Guyana

A Guyanese national is among three persons arrested in Greece following a major cocaine bust in a shipment of scrap iron from Guyana.

Greek Authorities have not released the names of the suspects but have said that the three were part of a major drug trafficking ring which oversaw the shipment of the cocaine from Guyana to Greece.
The over 60 pounds of cocaine was found neatly packed and stashed in pieces of scrap iron pipes that were part of the large container of scrap iron.
The bust was made last Friday when the shipment arrived in Greece. The Greek authorities have indicated that other drug pushers in Guyana were also behind the cocaine shipment. However, the authorities have not named the shipper from Guyana.

The cocaine bust was carried out by the anti-drug department of Attica’s Security Directorate, in cooperation with the US drug fighter DEA’s office at the US Embassy in Athens, the Office for Combating Economic Crimes and other police units in Greece.

According to reports out of Greece, “after an extensive police operation in Aspropyrgos and in the centre of Athens, three members of the organisation were nabbed: a Greek citizen (a well-known model), a Guyanese citizen and a Dutchman, aged respectively 38, 48 and 38. A large amount of cocaine – 27.170 kg – was confiscated.”
Officials in Greece have reported that from the beginning of 2015, the 48-year-old Guyanese operating mainly in the Netherlands, and the 38-year-old Greek were trying to establish a foothold in cocaine imports and create a network of their own.

“They had the opportunity to deal with Guyana and thus continuously dispatch quantities of cocaine to be retailed in Greece and in other European countries”, reports indicated.
The Customs Anti Narcotics Unit here in Guyana has repeatedly complained in the past about its inability to search and track container shipments out of Guyana. Those checks are expected to be done by the Guyana Revenue Authority
