Persons found in breach of new tint policy will face $75,000 fine under new legislation

When the new tint policy for vehicles takes effect in January, vehicle owners found in breach of the policy will face a fine of $75,000 under new legislation.

The new policy will allow a 35% tint waiver for all vehicle owners, while there will be special waivers for various categories of owners.

Minister of Home Affairs, Oneidge Walrond said she believes that the new tint policy is fair. She said Police Officers will be armed with tint measuring meters to ensure conformity.

“There will be tint meters, Police officers will have specific meters to test the tint on the spot and if you are found not to be in compliance, there will be heavy fine of $75,000 being levied for now having your tint in compliance,” the Minister noted.

The Minister further stated that the current system governing tint and tint permits is burdensome and has been under abuse.

“In the amendment, we will outline the regime how we are going to execute the compliance, we are going to outline the categories of persons that will be exempted from the tint, which I have already mentioned, it will outline how enforcement will be rolled in terms of the tint meter, how it will be calibrated and executed as well as the period for the fines. So, it is going to outline the entire regime—compliance and enforcement in the amendment,” the Minister stated.

She said the government’s to formalize a tint policy was also in keeping with evidence to support that there is no correlation between tinted vehicles and criminal activities.
