The Guyana Police Force has been continuing its efforts to weed out the marijuana cultivation and drug trade across the country. Its latest effort took place in the Wiruni Savannahs in the Upper Berbice River area.
The Police said agents from the Narcotics Branch of the Force discovered and destroyed several massive marijuana fields and dried marijuana, which together carried a value of $571 million.
According to a statement from the Police, the operation took place early on Tuesday morning in the Upper Berbice River area.

The Police team said they discovered an eight-acre plot of land that was now being prepped for cultivation, along with a makeshift camp and a drying area.
The Police said they found about 1400 lbs of dried cannabis in the abandoned camp along with a 12-gauge shotgun and nine matching cartridges. The shotgun had no serial number on it.
The Police said its Narcotics team took possession of the firearm and ammunition that have since been lodged at Police headquarters for ballistics testing.
The camp and dried cannabis were destroyed by fire and there were no arrests.
In a similar operation in the same area, the Police also reported discovering several additional marijuana fields and those fields were also destroyed.
