Police Detective Sergeant Elfannando Newman, who was charged by the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) four years ago with Larceny by a Public officer and was accused of stealing drugs from the Timehri Police station, has been freed of the charge.
He now wants his name to be fully cleared.
The charges against the Policeman, who was interdicted from duty, were all dismissed today by Magistrate Sunil Scarce for lack of evidence, and inadequate and unreliable testimonies.
It was alleged that Newman received 7 kilograms of marijuana and in his responsibilities as a Public Officer stole the marijuana to protect and prevent the conviction of the person who had ownership of it.
Following the allegations, a Civil Forfeiture investigation was conducted by SOCU, which claimed that the quantity of cannabis that should have been lodged by the Policeman was never lodged and was stolen.
Newman was represented by Attorney Eusi Anderson, who said after four years of witness testimonies and after being interdicted from duties, the Magistrate deemed the evidence led by the prosecution insufficient, inadequate and unreliable to meet the test of conviction.
With the charges now dropped, the lawyer said it is expected that Newman would return to his duties in the Guyana Police Force.
