WIN and APNU call on Government and CDC to provide additional relief to flood affected Region 10 areas

The Opposition, We Invest In Nationhood (WIN) party and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), are calling on the Government and Civil Defence Commission (CDC) to do more to assist flood affected areas in Region 10.

Over the last two weeks, residents in parts of Kwakwani, Hururu and Aroaima, have been battling with severe weather conditions and widespread flooding.

Kwakwani is one of the areas that has been hit the hardest by the floods. Opposition Leader, Azruddin Mohamed, who visited the area to distribute relief hampers said the flooding is due to years of Government neglect.

He said a delayed housing project which was earmarked for the relocation of residents from the waterfront is still to properly get off of the ground.

“This project was to be completed in November 2025, now we are in June 2026, they are experiencing another flood, they are still under water, for the past month they have been under this water and they have another month to be under this water, trapped in their home, yet today no word from the CDC,” the Opposition leader said.

The Opposition Leader stated that while the government initially pledged to begin the relocation process in 2021, the infrastructure contract for the New Kwakwani Phase One housing scheme was only awarded in March 2025 for $1.4 billion, but there has been little to no work done so far.

The Opposition Leader wants the CDC to move into the area to assist the flood victims, who have been trapped in their homes since the beginning of the flood.

Meanwwhile, a group of APNU Members of Parliament, also recently visited Lamp Island and Kwakwani to distribute relief items to the residents affected by the flooding, expressing concern about the sloth in the Government organising relief from the affected residents.

Meanwhile, the Civil Defence Commission in a statement explained that a team from the Commission conducted a flood impact assessment and engaged key stakeholders to support ongoing response efforts and to discuss the current flood situation, community impacts, and priority response needs.

The CDC said it remains committed to working closely with regional and local authorities to assess the affected households affected by the current flooding.
